After the death of her family in an airplane crash on a flight that she was meant to be on, Stephanie Patrick discovers the crash was not an accident. She then seeks to uncover the truth by adapting the identity of an assassin to track down those responsible.

In September 2003, Alejandra López de Lemos, eldest daughter of a professor of art history at the University of Seville, disappears without a trace. All suspicions fall on her ex-husband, but the police find no evidence against him. Several months go by and the media attention wanes.
